ADAM10 Evens Out the Double-Edged Sword of Radiotherapy in Pancreatic Cancer

چکیده
Abstract Radiotherapy plays an important role in the management of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), especially when patients are not surgical candidates. Radiation-induced tumor death provokes acute inflammation followed by a late-fibrotic response that parallels fibroinflammatory microenvironment PDAC, inciting question whether radiation-induced fibrosis contributes to PDAC progression. The study published this issue Mueller and colleagues presents potential mechanism linking with expression disintegrin metalloprotease 10 (ADAM10) ephrinB2, which may also contribute authors show ablation ADAM10 decreases improves survival preclinical models. These data suggest targeting help improve clinical outcomes radiotherapy, particularly if definitive radiation is possible. A better understanding biology radiotherapy cancer remains crucial, offer insight regard. See related article et al., p. 3255

ATP, a double-edged sword in cancer
The anti-neoplastic activity of ATP was first demonstrated in the early 80’s, where exogenous ATP inhibited the growth of pancreatic and colon cancer cells [1]. Since then, other studies have also shown the inhibitory effect of ATP on various cancers including prostate, breast, colon, liver, ovarian, colorectal, esophageal, melanoma and leukemia. Intravenous ATP increases the survival rate in c...

The enormous benefits of inhibition of ACE demonstrate that manipulation of the metabolism of peptide hormones is a valuable therapeutic strategy for cardiovascular disease. Recent attempts to expand these benefits have combined ACE inhibition with inhibition of other peptidases such as neutral endopeptidase (NEP) in a single molecule, a strategy known as vasopeptidase inhibition. NEP metaboliz...
متن کاملSunscreen- The Double Edged Sword
Sunscreens have long being recognized as substances to provide effective protection against the detrimental effects of solar radiation. The deleterious effects of sun exposure can be either acute (e.g. sunburn and drug-induced photo toxicity) or chronic (potential long-term risks of repeated sun exposures like solar elastosis, keratoses, induction of skin cancers, and alteration of immune respo...
متن کاملCombining angiogenesis inhibition and radiotherapy: a double-edged sword.
A large number of patients that undergo radiotherapy develop local failure. To improve the efficacy of treatment, there is an increasing interest in combining radiotherapy with novel targeted therapies. Inhibiting the growth of new tumor blood vessels, i.e. tumor angiogenesis, is such a targeted therapy. Growing tumors induce angiogenesis to ensure an adequate delivery of oxygen and nutrients a...

Pressure from passengers may be a major contributing factor in encouraging airlines to increase fresh air. In the August issue of Consumer Reports, airlines were ranked according to levels of carbon dioxide in airplane cabins and criticized for the low amo...
